How it works

Where the showtimes come from, and how we decide a screening is in English.

Where the showtimes come from

Straight from the cinemas and organisers themselves: the websites and ticketing systems of the multiplexes, the independent and art-house cinemas, the regional film archives, the festivals, the open-air summer screens and the cultural venues that run film cycles. They are read automatically once a week. Listing sites run by third parties are used only to cross-check, never as a source.

Spanish cinemas run their week from Friday to Thursday, and the next week goes on sale on Thursday, so that is when we read them. The days furthest ahead are thinner until every cinema has published. Festivals and pop-ups are checked every week too, whether or not they are in season, and a programme is added as soon as it appears.

How we decide a screening is in English

We never guess from a title or a country.

1. The cinema names the language for each session, for example "Versión inglesa" or "Inglés subtitulado en español". That is the best evidence and we use it as it is. 2. The cinema only says V.O.S.E. (original audio, Spanish subtitles). Then we identify the film from the cinema's own credits and the poster, and check its original language against film databases. An English-looking title proves nothing, and neither does the country: a film made in Austria can be in German. 3. Still not sure? The screening is not listed as English. If in doubt, we leave it out.

Dubbed sessions (Castilian or Catalan) are never listed as original, even when the film is English. Films in another original language are kept, behind the Language filter, marked "Not in English" with the real audio language, so nobody walks into a Persian film expecting English.

Staying current

The site shows each page's build date. A screening that has already started drops off by itself, using Madrid time. A cinema can still change its programme after we have read it, so confirm the session on the cinema's page when you book, which is where every booking link goes.
